Carrie Gullickson was born in Time, Norway on February 19, 1927, to Karen (Kverneland) and Johan Arnt Hesje. The family, which included five older brothers; John, Tannes, Kaari, Johan, and Lars, immigrated to Canada the following year. They landed at Pier 21 in Halifax on March 7, 1928.
The journey continued to Saskatchewan where the Hesje family settled near Birch Hills. Over the next 10 years they rented 3 different properties in the area and 3 more siblings joined the family; Ruth, Betty and Harold. In 1938 the family moved to Crooked River, a mill town at the time, where Pa Hesje bought a ¼ section of land a mile north of town.
Carrie enjoyed school, completing her grade 8 in Crooked River, and later taking some Bible school classes at the Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute, or SLBI at that time. Her first jobs were caring for children and/ or keeping house for a few different families. Many happy times were enjoyed at Christopher Lake Bible Camp over the years both as a family and at young people's camps, and it was at camp that she got to know her future husband.
On March 11, 1950, she married Clifford Gullickson and fulfilled her dream of becoming a farmer’s wife. They raised 5 children; Ronald, Lowell, Cheryl, Laverne and Marilyn. Then in 1971, Cliff and Carrie moved with the three youngest children to Outlook where they both worked at LCBI, Carrie worked in the kitchen until 1982. She and Cliff also spent a couple ‘schoolyears’ of their ‘retirement’ at a bible school in Mission, BC where her brother Johan was both the Bible Dean and a teacher. Carrie had the responsibility of the kitchen duties at the school. Cliff became ill during this time and passed away from cancer in 1984.
Carrie continued to live in the home she and Cliff had purchased together until 2012 when she moved into a condo at Luther Place. She lived a life of gratitude, counting her blessings, even during difficult times. Friends and family have many wonderful memories of gathering in her home or of ‘garden’ parties enjoyed together in her back yard. She continued to cherish time spent with family and friends while she lived at Luther Place.
We rejoice that our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother is now residing safely in the presence of Jesus in her heavenly eternal home.
