Obituary For Douglas John Wankel

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Doug Wankel’s passing to his eternal home in Glory on August 5, 2024. Doug spent 84 years in the community of Elbow, farming and raising his family with his beloved wife of 61 years, Marie. Winters were spent at curling rinks near and far. He represented Saskatchewan at the 1967 Brier in Ottawa and in several Masters and Legion Canadian Curling Championships over the years. He was named to the Saskatchewan Curling Hall of Fame in 2005 as well as the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003 as a member of the Elbow Cranes Baseball team. He was an active member of his church and community and will be missed by all who knew him.

Doug’s memory will live on through his children: Doyle and Nordis Wankel and daughters Dayna-Marie and Mark Bosnak, Quinn and Shay Stephenson, Lindsay and Ty Redden; Denise Sielski and daughters Afton and Eric Balliant, Vallyn Sielski and Colin Bradbury, Devynne and David Kopperud; Val and Dwayne Koshinsky and daughters Kelly and Dan Bosch, Beth and Clark Giesbrecht, and Emily and Brett Lang, and 21 much loved great-grandchildren. Also left to mourn are his sister Lois Gossen, sisters-in-law Ruby Weatherall (Murray), Cheryl Dahl, and June Wankel, as well as many precious nieces, nephews and friends. Doug was predeceased by his wife, Marie, son-in-law, Ron Sielski, brothers, James and Robert, sister, Adena Hotzak, as well as numerous family members. Doug will be affectionately remembered by his wife, Carol Burghardt, and her family: David and Andrea Burghardt; Pam and Brett Adams and family; Tim and Lora Burghardt and family; Aaron Burghardt and family. A celebration of Doug’s life will take place on Saturday August 17 at 11:00 AM, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Elbow. Lunch and fellowship will take place at the church following the service. Donations in memory of Doug can be made to Elbow Bethel Lutheran Church, Elbow Lutheran Bible Camp, or a charity of your choice.

A Service of Remembrance will take place Saturday, August 17, 2024, 11:00am Bethel Lutheran Church, Elbow, Sask.

Interment will follow at the Elbow Cemetery.
