Shirley Marie Gibb (nee Odegard) entered Heaven peacefully on September 21, 2024, after her family was able to surround her with love and prayer. Her life was a beautiful testament to her deep and abiding faith in God.
Born on October 31, 1936, in Outlook, SK, Shirley was the youngest of three children raised on a farm near Macrorie, SK. Her parents, Ole and Jenny Odegard both from Norway, were devoted Lutherans who instilled in Shirley a love for God from an early age. Sundays were devoted to church, Sunday school, and fellowship, traditions that from a very early age shaped Shirley's faith.
Tragically, Shirley lost her father at a young age, which had a huge impact on her and the family. Her mother showed resilience by staying on the farm, boarding teachers, renting the land, and baking pies to support her family. Shirley attended a one-room schoolhouse in Big Valley and later, at the age of 16, she attended the Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute for her final two years of high school. It was there that she fully committed her life to Christ, a decision that would guide her in all aspects of her life.
Shirley pursued her passion for helping others by becoming a Registered Nurse, a career that reflected her caring and compassionate nature. On October 5, 1957, she married Bill Gibb, and together they built a beautiful life, first in Saskatoon and later in Vancouver, where they raised their two children, Gerry and Heather.
Shirley's life was full. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, curling, baking, swimming, singing, gardening, and reading. She and Bill shared a love of travel, embarking on numerous cruises and RV trips, often combining their adventures with acts of service through organizations such as SOWERS (Servants on Wheels Ever Ready) and Campers for Christ.
Shirley's greatest joy, however, came from spending time with her family and making lifelong memories. Her grandchildren remember all the happy times camping with Grandma and Grandpa at Holiday Park, lots of swimming, laughing, going shopping together, and having unbirthday parties.
She is predeceased by her parents, Ole and Jenny Odegard, her sister Irene in infancy, her sister Joyce, and her brother Jorgen. Shirley is deeply missed by her husband of 66 years, Bill Gibb.
She is fondly remembered by her son, Gerry (Sue) Gibb, and their children, Ryan (Rosie) and their daughter, Winnie, and Alicia and her daughter, Bella, and son Charley. She will also be cherished in memory by her daughter, Heather (Keith) Derdall, and their children, Adam and his daughter Nadia, Jeremy, and Twyla (Matt) and their children, Mikayla and Alexander. She is also fondly remembered by extended family and dear friends.
To those who knew her, she will always remain "memorable". Her daily walk with Jesus was a source of strength and her unwavering faith left a lasting impact.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Preston Park 1 for their loving care of Shirley over the past nine years, and to the doctors and nurses at St. Paul's Hospital for their exceptional care during her final days.
"For to me, to live is Christ,(he is my source of joy, my reason to live) and to die is gain!" (tor I will be with him in eternity). -Philippians 1:21
