Stuart was born in England in 1940 to Charlotte
Elizabeth and Walter Overton. Walter passed
away when Dad was only 7. In the late 1940’s, Dad
immigrated to Ontario with his Mom and this was
very close to the same time that his older brother
Lewis immigrated with his wife and children. Dad’s
young life was hard. Not having a father, Lewis, who
was 20 years older, became Stuart’s father figure; all
the while trying to raise his own family, after serving
in WWII. Dad did not have it easy but nevertheless, he tried to become a good father to us.
In 1968, Dad met our mother Linda, who was the
love of his life. They married and would travel to
Florida for vacations. Kerry arrived in 1971 and Sean
followed in 1974. We resided in Barrie, Ont. There
was so much snow one winter, that Kerry recalls Dad
building a snow fort for the children. One year there
was a family trip to Texas, which included a statue of
a giant jackrabbit that terrified Kerry; to which Stuart
would tease her about for many years afterwards.
The children were still young when the decision was
made to move to BC. Stuart was working his way up in the Credit Union, ultimately becoming the collections manager at the head office of VanCity Credit Union in Vancouver. Weekends were spent taking car rides through the lower mainland. The trips to the beach at White Rock topped the favorite list; as well as picking blackberries by the railroad tracks and having BBQ’s on the beach. A long walk on the pier to watch people catching crab would end the day.
We also took a few vacations back to Ontario to visit
family. One trip back to Ontario was by car and via
the Northern USA where we stopped at various places
along the route.
Stuart wanted a less stressful life as he got older and
we moved to Gibsons, BC. There, we had a small farm with a beautiful garden and enjoyed a quieter life surrounded by goats and chickens. Moving around seemed to be in Stuart’s character and
after a few years, the move was made to Slocan Park,
and then Armstrong. With the kids grown and gone,
Stuart and Linda moved to Saskatchewan.
Stuart held a job at the meat plant in Saskatoon and
on the weekends he and Linda loved to go to the flea
markets. Sadly, Linda passed away just before Stuart
retired. He then sold the acreage and moved into town and took it easy. Stuart never did get over losing Linda. Linda and Stuart had made plans for many trips after his retirement, but due to her passing Stuart either went on the trip alone, or took his lifelong friend, Stu. He saw many places in his travels, including the East Coast, a Caribbean Cruise and went back to BC to see his grandkids Tyler and Cassie. He loved being a Granddad and was very proud of his grandkids. We are sure Mom was with him wherever he went.
